However this week I got to meet a really good friend of mine Ethan @pdzzy and Ben Borgerding @ben.borgerding and got the Insta 360 wet with the lake tides.
What inspiration created this set? I will go through the planning stages envisioning, creating and the final editing. People have asked particularly how I go about these photoshoots, please search different sections that contain tools and techniques that can help you envision your next photoshoot!
I believe I was going home from the gym. It came to me in a few ways but I decided to ask Ethan if he had a GoPro. He usually has many different cool toys laying around to mess around with. I had been thinking for a while. I watched a video of Marc doing a pov street photography walk. It was a unique format. This also reminded me of John Free a New York City street photographer and his youtube videos explaining things like light, expression and capturing the moment.
The second, Marc Taraz Steiner on Twitter and YouTube. He created one or two videos in august of him walking through Hong Kong. This inspired me to create something similar but in a different style and format, check him out. He does portrait work and has stunning photographs

Lately I’ve also gotten into music rhythm and dancing. Two inspirations that came to mind were @tammyshiann who creates freestyle dances.

There was also this artist named @Phives on instagram based on chicago with a phenomenal photograph of another photographer holding a camera with a rode mic.

Now that I had some inspiration next was creating a general plan. I conducted this about 2-3 hours before the actual shoot.
Why did I start planning so late? Sunset photography ideas work best for me as a photographer when the clouds are visible. Sometimes if you plan too far ahead your expectations may change. Also this way there are more flexible ideas that can be created.
I chose 2 different locations to choose from starting at The Hoan and then going to the pabst sign in Milwaukee. The Hoan by the lighthouse had westward illumination. The Pabst Sign’s perspective and narrow roads could also be manipulated to show scale. The Pabst sign also had the light hitting the composition on the left as the sun went down.
Questions I ask: Which direction is the light? What are the clouds doing? What's the mood?
A tip for photographers is to carry your equipment light. During sunset runs this is crucial to not get tied down if you want to shoot multiple angles in one sunset peak. Going into the shoot with concepts beforehand even during a sunset photoshoot is very powerful.
You can gain inspiration from other photographers without necessarily copying, which is the strongest thing you can do. When I was out on this particular shoot I brought my camera and a gimbal, not much else. I knew I was going to rely on the natural light. The two main ideas were sunset photography and video.
Gain inspiration as you go!
What do I shoot with? Good question. Fair question. I used a Canon EOS RP 2018 model along with a 24-104 F4 USM for the duration of the shoot. I also used Insta360. Insta360 is discussed in a separate article.

I wanted to bring another subject into the shoot besides myself for this photoshoot; this was Ethan. Ethan has been a good friend of mine since I started doing portrait and street photography more in the winter of 2018. Ethan is a videographer, pilot and photographer currently in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Highly recommend checking him out.

The second person that Ethan brought along with him was Ben Borgerding. I met Ben back in 2019 on the top of the Fiserv Forum garage with smoke bombs. It was a great shoot, one of my favorites in Milwaukee. He came a long too for this cloudy sunset.

I start by importing the files from my SD Card and separating my images and my videos. This allows me to go into either lightroom and premiere pro by importing the entire batch.
I drag these photos into a pre-made catalog for the month. Once these are loaded I create smart previews to review them in the preview tab. I also add my meta tags and keywords to certain sections of people. These include my website, phone number and any other information that might be helpful for people to find the original photo owner.
I rate the images Most likely to be used across my portfolio, pinterest, instagram and twitter. These I give a star rating from 1-5 in lightroom. Anything I like is given 1 star or more. Then I edit maybe 1-2 of my favorites and get a sense of where this set will take me.
I’ve created videos since a very young age so I have created a whole process for creating this. I open up premiere pro and create bins relating to either the spatial or idea in my mind. This can be seen in the names such as INTRO, MID, END, Music, Effects, Texts, Images and MISC. This reduces editing time by ten fold.
Once all my clips are designated I start chunking down how the timeline will flow with another to try my best to make it entertaining/ informative as best as possible. This video in particular has taken 2 hours and I expect it to take another 2 hours to finish and add the unique things to it after effects. That is generally what happens. Follow me on instagram for more!
That is the process of a regular photoshoot for me. It can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days to finish a photoshoot start to finish. The time curated for creative colletivation allows the shoot to flow to it’s best level.
I shared some great artists that inspired this shoot, how I planned it out, meeting everyone and editing. Hopefully you found a way to include some techniques in your work! Comment on my latest post and tell me what your favorite part of your process is in creating work, have a great day!
