Three Reasons Your Home Doesn't Produce Good Photos

January 16, 2024 09:17 AM by Isaias J

No matter which area of commercial photography you work within, the ability to complete at least some of your tasks from home probably feels like a real perk of the job. After all, this chance to get down to at-home photo shoots allows you to become completely immersed in your creative process and your photographic vision.

Unfortunately, not all households are suited to major photographic pursuits. In fact, if you aren’t careful, your at-home photos could end up grainy and unclear. The question is, why might your home produce poor-quality photos, and what can you do about it?

Issue 1: There’s a lack of lighting

As a professional photographer, you’re probably all too aware of issues with a lack of lighting. As well as impacting image visibility, a home setting that’s too dim can result in blurred, poor-quality images that you’ll never be able to use. Some great options for enhancing natural light in your home include mirror positioning, room layout, and shoot proximity to your windows. Open-plan layouts are also great for all-around light exposure, and they’re surprisingly easy to achieve with the help of demolition contractors.

Issue 2: Your walls are too bright

In contrast to the point above, it’s also possible that your walls are too bright. Light is vital, after all, but cream, yellow, or otherwise bright walls can also whitewash your photos and see them losing vibrance. As such, while you want to highlight natural light with your architectural and position choices, you should opt for darker colors on your walls, or at least a dark backdrop in key lighting areas.

Issue 3: You don’t have a home studio

Admittedly, a photographic studio isn’t a prerequisite to taking great photos at home, but it can certainly help. After all, you can completely tailor a studio space towards your photography needs, from positioning skylights in just the right places to installing plenty of storage for even bulky accessories like external lights.

Taking great pictures at home can be a challenge, especially if the lighting or decor isn’t ideal. However, some fantastic photographers have built entire careers around their indoor pictures. You could achieve the same with the right home design, and an eye for the best places in your house to take pictures with great results.
